EVESHAM FIRE DISTRICT NO.1 PROPOSED 2012 BUDGET AND ELECTION VOTE TO BE HELD ON FEBRUARY 18TH

  Dear Evesham Resident,

We are pleased to provide this letter to Evesham voters regarding the proposed 2012 fire district budget and elections on February 18th. We hope this letter provides you with the necessary information so that you can cast your vote in support of the fire department with an informed opinion.

The proposed 2012 budget of the Evesham Fire District proposes NO TAX INCREASE! This is the second year in a row that there has been no tax increase!

Evesham Fire-Rescue is a combination career and volunteer agency that delivers emergency services to the 50,000 residents of Evesham Township. In 2011, Evesham Fire-Rescue responded to more than 5,400 calls for fire, rescue, ambulance service within Evesham’s thirty square miles and our volunteer staff contributed more than 20,000 hours of their time!

Our annual budget, as approved by the voters, is what sustains the daily operations of your fire department and all of the services it provides including, fire and ambulance service, vehicle extrication, specialized rescue, public education, fire investigation, commercial and home fire inspections, fire plan review and code compliance.

We understand the burden of taxation, as we are Evesham Township residents as well. Rest assured that the Fire District endeavors to act in the most fiscally responsible manner with your tax dollars. We are doing everything possible to maintain a stable tax rate while also complying with the state and federal regulations.

In addition to casting your vote in support of the budget, we would like you to be informed about the election as well. There are two members of the public running for two seats on the Board of Fire Commissioners. Candidate Mark Scian and Candidate Tom Conkey are running unopposed for the respective terms. These incumbents have done an excellent job while serving on the Board of Fire Commissioners in keeping your tax rate low while providing excellent service.

In accordance with New Jersey State Law, the annual budget vote and election will be held on Saturday, February 18th between 2pm and 9pm. Your vote can be cast at your local fire station. Please check the voting information PDF below to see where your general election district votes during the fire district vote.

Thank you for your consideration and continued support in helping to approve the 2012 no tax increase budget.

Sincerely,Ted LowdenFire ChiefThe Proposed Evesham Township Fire District No.1 2012 Budget can be accessed by clicking this link....

Shortly after 8 PM on Wednesday, January 18th, units were summoned to the 100 block of Woodlake Drive in the township’s Kings Grant section for the report of a house fire. Deputy Chief Addezio arrived and found a small amount of fire showing from the home’s chimney area. Engine 2231’s crew stretched 1.75” handline and extinguished the small fire from the exterior of the home. Tower 2215 arrived and deployed its main aerial to overhaul the damaged chimney. Further examination revealed the chimney to be loaded with creosote from improper maintenance causing the metal flue pipe to overheat and fail allowing fire to spread into the wooden chimney encasement. Residents noticed the fire after reportedly hearing what sounded like a helicopter hovering outside. Shortly after noticing this, the homeowner walked outside, saw flames shooting from the chimney and activated 911. All occupants made it out of the home safely and damage to the structure was contained to the chimney.
Several stories posted in recent months have referenced homeowners having their chimneys inspected by a CSIA certified chimney inspector. Having these inspections done every other year can spot defects in the chimney liner prior to a fire event in your home. For a certified inspector in your area please consult this website: http://www.csia.org ...

FIREPLACE SAFETY

Few things are nicer than the warmth and crackle of fireplace on a cold night. With the freezing temperatures of the winter arriving, some steps MUST be taken to insure your family and your home remain safe while using your home's fireplace. Recently, in Stamford, Connecticut, tragedy struck a family early Christmas morning. A fire that started as a result of improperly discarded fireplace embers took the lives of 3 children and 2 adults. Here are just a few tips that can make all the difference and keep YOUR family safe:
· Utilize care when constructing your fire - Stack logs toward the rear of the firebox and use a metal grate to allow for proper airflow and to act as a restraint to keep logs from rolling out of the fireplace.
· Have your chimney inspected every other year (every year for those that frequently use their fireplaces) - A CSIA-certified inspector will insure your chimney’s cap, liner, and flue are free from damage and will function safely and efficiently.
· Use a screen in front of the fireplace - This will give some protection from embers from ‘popping’ out of the fireplace and onto combustible items such as carpeting or furniture.
· Keep furniture and other combustibles away from the fireplace -This includes items on the hearth or mantel, furniture in the room, etc.
· DISCARD YOUR ASHES PROPERLY - Each year, EFD averages 6 fires per year due to improperly discarded ashes. Ashes should ALWAYS be stored in a metal ash can and away from combustibles and outdoors until it is certain they are no longer smoldering.
· Install or test existing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors -Proper working detectors are an insurance policy for advanced warning of a hazardous condition with your fireplace.
· NEVER LEAVE A BURNING FIREPLACE UNATTENDED!! ...

BE AWARE, BE INFORMED, BE PREPARED: READY FOR ANYTHING THIS WINTER

With forecasters predicting another winter with above average snowfall for our region, it is important for homeowners and business owners to arm themselves with information and take steps to prepare for any emergency that might present itself. The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) has suggested the motto of “Be aware. Be informed. Be prepared.”

Be aware - Be aware of your surroundings! Pay close attention to information and instructions from authorities. Do not bypass road signage indicating a road is closed! If something doesn’t look or feel safe, it most likely isn’t.
Get informed! Utilize reliable sources for information during an emergency. Evesham Fire-Rescue has made a strong commitment to keeping the public informed during emergencies utilizing a host of different media outlets. During major emergencies or significant storms, homeowners can follow EFD on Facebook and Twitter for up to the minute updates containing official information and instruction for homeowners. These are both maintained along with our department’s website (http://www.eveshamfire.org) and Evesham Township’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) website (http://www.evesham-nj.gov).
Make a plan - Much like planning and practicing your family’s fire evacuation plan, residents are encouraged to make an all hazards plan.
Make an Emergency Go Kit - An Emergency Go Kit should contain the following: copies of insurance policies, medical insurance cards, a 3 day supply of necessary medications, cell phone w/charger, battery operated radio, pet food (if needed).
Report any emergent conditions (i.e. fires and medical emergencies) as normal by dialing 9-1-1.

Evesham Township’s OEM will also utilize Reverse 9-1-1 in certain circumstances to inform residents and provide official instructions on how to deal with an emergency. Reverse 9-1-1 enables officials to even target specific geographic locations within the township to provide location-specific information.
